The Language of Color: Perception, Meaning, and the Photographic Experience

Color is often the first thing we notice and the last thing we fully understand. Color offers us so much to understand and process when we are working with images behind the camera or while processing. Color influences emotion, shapes memory, directs attention, and quietly alters the way we experience a photograph. Yet color is more than a visual element within the frame. It is part of how we perceive and make sense of the world itself.
In this session, we will explore color as a language of perception and meaning that shapes our communication long before words arrive. Through photographs, color theory concepts and visual exploration, we will examine how color creates meaning, how it affects our emotional response and how greater awareness of color can transform the way we approach making our images. To see color well is to become aware of how perception shapes experience and how experience, interpretation, and intention ultimately shape the photographs we make.
As we explore different ideas through image critiques and demonstrations, we will dive into how color concepts and choices shape the emotional and visual experience of photographs. Even tiny tweaks in hue, saturation, or balance can make a big difference! By grasping these concepts, we can create with more intention and clarity, enriching our artistic journey together!
We will focus on trying to get to the heart of our experience with color and, over the presentation, try to explore a deeper question together: What insights can color provide about our perception?
